The Phenomenon of Hipsters

Hipsters. Meanwhile it became a well know phenomenon. Whether this is in a positive or negative way, that depends on you. Today I'll tell you something of my opinion about hipsters, the fake (or wannabe) hipsters and the mainstreamers. I decided to write this post due to this (Dutch) article by Serena. After reading a lot of comments right there I really felt like giving my opinion about hipsters and all prejudices. First of all: I'm not against hipsters and I'm not against mainstreamers. If I have to choose, I'll choose the hipster side, but that doesn't mean anything. Be prepared for a long article with a lot of text! If you're not in the mood to read everything just enjoy the hipster jokes! :)

I don't think there is an obvious definition of hipsters, but if you'll ask me to describe them I'd say: aversion to the mainstream, always trying to be unique, having their own style and sometimes a little bit arrogant. I think I own some little traits recognizable from hipsters, but I wouldn't say I'm a hipster. I love to wear unique pieces of clothing and I'll admit: I really don't like seeing someone wearing something I own too! I just like to wear different things and not all those mainstream clothes. I like outstanding and notable outfits, but not too much.

So let's start with the mainstreamers. I'm not against those people, just against the attitude of some of them. When there's a trend you really like, you should definitely wear those items, no doubt about that. The thing that annoys me is the fact that so many girls claim 'they had always liked this trend'. For instance the mustache jewellery trend: a bunch of girls immediately started buying wearing mustache jewellery and said "I've always loved mustache jewellery" but in fact they only like it because it's trending and everyone is wearing it. I'm quite informed of all current trends, but I only wear things I really like. I think that's what everyone should do: not just blindly follow every trend without deciding if you actually like it.

Another thing about hipsters is the fact they have a big aversion to the mainstream and trends. Imagine a hipster wearing a lot of pieces with studs and spikes. As soon as this became an enormous trend, they couldn't ban all studs and spikes from their wardrobes any faster. I actually don't understand this exaggeration. Okay, I don't like it either when everyone is wearing something just like me, but why would you react that extravagant?! I mean, if you really like something (in this example the studs and spikes), you'll keep on wearing it, whether it is trending or not. When you're able to ban all those items from your wardrobe that quick, you can't fool me to say you actually liked those items.

There's also something I really have to agree with the hipsters. This is that situation when you're absolutely into some kind of clothes or accessories and everybody is like "nah, I don't like it" or "oh my, that's awful" and a while later it becomes a trend. Guess what? Everyone who didn't like it or just thought 'it was awful' before, is wearing it now! Okay, I know your opinion and style can change, but it's just not logical at all that you hate something and as soon as it becomes popular you absolutely love it. A typical example of people who blindly follow every trend.

Finally I want to make a difference between the real hipsters and the fake or wannabe hipsters. You have the real hipsters, who just want to show their own and unique style and don't meddle with the world around them. When something they like becomes a trend, they just switch to something else. Then you have the wannabe hipsters, who try to be unique and different too hard. They are the ones who are screaming out loud that they were into something before it became trending. Real hipsters just leave it behind them and go on. Wannabe hipsters are in my opinion the most annoying ones and obviously they have caused that bad reputation of hipsters. They are the ones everyone's hating on so they quite screw up the image of the real hipsters.

Overall I think I made my opinion clear. I'm not against hipsters at all, I actually like real hipsters. Maybe someone can make sure the wannabe's shut up and stop screwing up the reputation of real hipsters. I think the reaction of hipsters when something becomes trending is a little bit extravagant but I can totally agree with the fact they want to be unique. Please keep in mind all I said is my opinion so you don't have to agree with me and those are no facts. I also want to mention this opinion isn't only about fashion, this applies to everything about hipsters: also about their music preferences. And maybe the pictures make you think I don't like hipsters, but if you actually read the text you'll know that's not true. I just think those jokes are really funny, nothing personal!

I still don't think I've said everything I wanted to say: I could go on for a few hours but I won't bother you with more text! I hope you all get my opinion and thoughts. Right now I'm really curious to your opinion or answers to this post. Don't mind leaving an enormous comment, I'd love to read them all!

    1. Klopt!
